Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“I have a lot of respect for Rutgers and it is going to be a battle,” coach Nikki Izzo-Brown says. “Obviously, when it gets to this point, every team is worthy of getting into the NCAA Tournament, so anything can happen.” The Mountaineers are serving as one of 32 host schools for the first round of the national tournament – the third season under this format. In a match that saw plenty of scoring opportunities for both squads, the No. 15 West Virginia University women's soccer team took advantage of its best look and walked away with its first Big 12 Soccer Championship title, defeating Oklahoma State 1-0 this afternoon at Swope Soccer Village. The title is the first for any WVU team at a Big 12 Conference championship. If is the program's fourth conference championship title and third in four years. Today's win is the Mountaineers' (16-3-2, 7-1 Big 12) 12th victory in 13 matches. In just two seasons, No. 1-seed WVU has won three Big 12 titles – back-to-back regular-season titles, and today's conference tournament. With the win, WVU earns the Big 12 Conference's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Championships, ensuring the Mountaineers' 14th straight appearance in the tournament, the 10th-longest active streak in the nation. West Virginia University President Jim Clements sent the following letter to the University community following Monday’s announcement of his appointment to lead Clemson University:
Almost five years ago my family and I moved to Morgantown, West Virginia. At that time we didn’t really know anyone in the state. We quickly learned that West Virginia is filled with wonderful, hard-working, loyal, and dedicated people – and that West Virginia University is made up of great faculty, staff, administrators, and students. I am so thankful and honored that I had the chance to serve with so many outstanding people in the pursuit of the important land-grant mission at WVU. The watch party for Saturday night is on! Kickoff is 6 pm.
Come out to Buffalo Joe's and cheer on the team with your fellow Mountaineer fans. We will have touchdown prizes to giveaway. If I haven't already heard from you, let me know if you plan to be there on Saturday. Let's Go Mountaineers! Kari I want to extend my sincere appreciation to those who joined us for the past weekend's festivities at Billy Bob's and the WVU-TCU tailgate party. We had a great turnout at both events and the TCU stands were full of fans proudly wearing the Old Gold & Blue. The best part of the weekend was watching our Mountaineers come from behind to beat TCU, taking the game to overtime for the 2nd straight year.
Special thanks goes to the following people who contributed to the events:
